The waves slap against the shore, relentless in their rhythmic dance as they curl onto the sand. The morning birdsong erupts, the air is beginning to fill with shrill sounds. This is my first day on St.John in the U. S Virgin Islands. This small island, a jewell in the Caribbean, offers an opportunity to slow down and sync with "island time". The climate necessitates moving to a different beat than we do in New England. This is the place for mindfulness! My morning meditation felt like a surround-sound sensory experience of breathing in the salty air, listening to the waves crashing on the shore as a variety of birds sang along. What a way to start a vacation! No matter where we find ourselves, can we bring our senses onboard to help claim the moment?
Where is your mind right now? Without judging the findings, chances are you may have been thinking about something in the future or trying to resolve something from the past.
We are hard-wired to scan for problems and threats. Research shows that we spend about 50% of our waking hours in this state of mind called the default mode network.
There is another way though and that is with mindfulness; being present to more moments of your day without judgmentas you live them. Is this a day that you can tip the scales and be present more than 50% of the time to what is happening, as it is happening?? You may be surprised with how wonderful it feels to live more of your moments fully.
